Green Room Review:

Like the Cornerhouse, the Greenroom is the sort of place where you're likely to come across a table full of creative types. However, the similarity stops there.

In the Cornerhouse, that table is likely to be made up of someone who works on Flux magazine or Citizen 32, an up-and-coming photographer and a man in his mid-thirties with a beard and a guitar. In the Greenroom, you're more likely to find poets who perform as drag queens or vampires, performance artists discussing their latest concept and visiting experimental theatre companies taking a break between performances.

Greenroom is more about its performance spaces than its bar. It shows the most cutting-edge new theatre, writing, and music in the northwest, as well as running festivals, workshops and seminars with artists and practitioners.

Having said that, the bar is worth a look even if avant guarde art isn't your thing. There are two levels, and DJs and live music pop up from time to time to give the place a boost. A dark interior makes for a cosy atmosphere and we're impressed by the range of soft drinks they offer on top of the usual beers and spirits. What's more, it can offer a quieter option to most other places during the weekend, which everyone appreciates from time to time.

the green manchester has now decided to introduce live music in the cafe bar on specified sundays in the month. i happen to be pasing there one sunday. it was a pleasant change from my usual routine, and i even made it to work on monday, without an hangover, as the atmosphere lends itself to curry, conversation, coffee and cool music.
