The Britons Protection

The Britons Protection

Our The Britons Protection Review

The Briton's Protection is one of the oldest pubs in Manchester (despite the best efforts of a fire in the seventies) and it is one of our favourites too. We love the Victorian interior, the open fires in the back rooms and the cosy atmosphere on winter nights.

The best thing about this pub is the selection of whisky on offer. There are over three hundred different varieties, from Jack Daniels to brands we've never even heard of. Brilliant. But if you're not a whisky lover, there are some lovely local ales and a fair gang of spirits to explore too. When it comes to wine, there are some decent bottles on sale - but we'd steer clear if you're only after a glass.

There's a nice clientele, from office workers to a healthy gang of musicians who storm the place during their half-hour interval when they're playing at the Bridgewater Hall round the corner. Their instruments get in the way sometimes, but it just adds flavour to the place.

The other thing we really like about the Briton's Protection is the events they have going on every so often. Pub quizzes, band nights, anti-racism poetry rallies… Legend has it that Badly Drawn Boy started his career in the upstairs room. But you can't blame the pub for that.
