Our Funkademia Review:
After a short hiatus - due to their former home Zumeba shutting its doors - one of Manchester’s most popular and longest running club nights moved to One Central Street. Running every week on Saturday nights this has been a good move for both promoter and venue and it has been a hit with Manc party-goers.
During its 12 year track record Funkademia has almost become part of the fixtures and fittings of Manchester’s clubbing scene. This is its fourth home as promoter Dave Payne sees it, “one of the most pleasing aspects to the night is how it has moved from the Boardwalk to the Attic to Subspace to Zumeba and every time it has managed to keep with it a tremendously loyal audience of regulars who just love to go out, dance the night away & just enjoy themselves."
Currently boasting an impressive members list of over 12,000 members, anyone that has been to the night over the years will be able to testify to its enduring love affair with Manchester’s music lovers. The cues at Zumeba, Space and The Attic constantly snaked around the block and OCS has been doing a brisk trade.
The music policy remains the same: a broad playlist of music of black origin right the way from Motown, disco, soul-funk to rap and hip-hop. If your MP3 player or record collection comprises of large amount of James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, Grandmaster Flash and Aretha Franklin then Funkademia will be right down your street, in your door, on your couch, feet up, with the master volume turned up to ten.
We’ll leave the final word to the promoters, take it away Mr Payne. "The whole DJ roster (Trafford Lovething, Jason Vereker, Myk Nolan, Payney, Jon Busstop, Fritz Great Lakes & the Good For the Soul boys) is lined up & raring to go & we're also going to be looking to bring on board some new DJ talent into the night. We're also going to start the night a bit earlier than we have before & utilise our Northern Funk brand & DJ's for the first hour or so people will get a bigger night out.
”Of course we were attracted to One Central Street as they have built up a great brand and a loyal customer base over the last five years, but a big positive to Funkademia was that the venue is led by Ross McKenzie and ex-Hacienda manager Leroy Richardson who have both been big influences in the city over the years. With One Central Street we feel that we are putting together two independent Manchester institutions to create an exciting Saturday night clubbing experience.”

dont think I could go every week as the music can tend to be similar.... but I will be trying to make a regular monthly visit. The crowd has really improved since I last went in december and after speaking with the very nice door people I was told that this is something they had been working on and had a zero tolerance with trouble makers or scallies, it has made a difference. The only downside is that I got there at 11:30 and had to wait for 30 minutes to get in as it was that busy, my advice to anyone going down would be to get there before 11, a few of my mates got in with in 10 minutes. I was unsure about the move from oxford road but the venue does really suit funkademia...

I heard DJ Bex from Po na na is playing Funkademia this weekend. you absolutely much check her out. my favourite clubnight coupled with the best party DJ in Manc. cannot wait!!! :)

went for the first time last week and loved it... one of the most diverse crowds i have seen in a club but it worked well, everyone just there for the music it seems. DJs played a good mixture of soul funk and disco, with some big party tunes too - was really good to hear candi station you got the love in a club again. Ill be going again that for sure.

After some initial reservations, I think the new venue's ace. Reminds me of the old Funkademia at the Attic (back to its roots and not as commercial as SubSpace) lovin it! So pleased the resident DJ's have followed Funkademia!! All in all a good positve move!!

this has to be one of the best saturday nights going. the music, without question, is always good, the dj's play such an eclectic mix and although the venue isn't the attic, subspace gives you much more room to move and also to chill out. what ever mood you're in this place will lift your spirits and make it impossible for you not to move your feet!

Funkademia...put simply, is the best night out I've had. It's the dictionary definition of cool, and if you can't dance here, then you've got no legs. Great tunes, great atmosphere...what more could you want?
