Deansgate dance venue locks the doors for good

With all the celebration of Sankeys' poll success, the sadness surrounding the final days of Jilly's Rockworld/Music Box and the successful launch of the Venus club, another piece of news has gone almost unnoticed by the Manchester nightlife press and many of its clubbers.

Club V, the Deansgate venue within which Venus had many years of success before finding its own building to occupy, closed on Saturday April 10th.

This ties in to the oft-believed notion that Venus and Club V's success walked hand-in-hand. Once Venus left the venue, it was replaced by another well-known funky house event, Naked. This party brought in jocks from the likes of Miss Moneypenny's and the old 2Risque, but it seems like it wasn't enough to stem the exodus of clubbers that were no doubt travelling a few yards north up Deansgate to the new Venus.

Club V also brought in a range of Friday night promotions, including Serco and Re:Format, that introduced tech and electronica to the club for the first time, but sadly the club hasn't survived the changes.

Many people will think of Club V as the venue that provided Angel Deelite on a Friday and Venus on a Saturday, and find it hard to see the venue as anything other than host to those two parties. In its official statement, the management said, "Closing down has been one of the hardest desicions we have ever had to make and we would like to thank every single customer and member of staff that has ever walked through those doors to see those brightly-lit pillars."

We forsee the space possibly being used as a club in the future, a retail or office use wouldn't really fit such a basement, but for now the city's clubland can only mourn another loss, and a quiet one at that.

I'm not surprised the venue shut down with all the attitude and grief the DJs used to get from the owner for not playing "the Club V music policy". Alongside that, the attitude of the door staff made it a very unwelcoming experience and the way you were made to feel by certain arrogant people at the club made it very off putting. Bye Club V, you won't be missed half as much as you think you will be.
