New mixed/gay dirty house club for Whitworth Street West

It was with a fair bit of surprise that we learned that The Brickhouse was no more. Since 1991 it had been the indie/Madchester club that catered to more than just a typical student crowd.

ClubHD now stands in its place, having opened on March 4th, and is offering itself as a new mixed/gay club. Saturdays is Lockdown, an electro and vocal house party that likes it hard and dirty. Local guests are supported by residents DJ Dusty and DJ Jini Cowan. Fridays are a more commercial affair with a mash-up of dance, R'n'B and chart featuring Roger Da'Silva and Tom Platt. It even seems that Thursdays are retaining some of the building's illustrious past by presenting Brickhouse 2.0. Same tunes, new interior then.

So the question offers itself. Does this piece of the city need a club playing music along these lines? Arguably there are already several bars at Deansgate Locks doing a similar thing but without being marketed towards the gay/mixed crowd. This brings up another question. The Edge (Ducie House, Ducie Street) and the second, recent life of the No.1 Club (at 1 Central Street near the town hall.Originally a gay club in the early nineties) both attempted to offer the gay crowd something outside of Canal Street and failed. It can be sometimes difficult to persuade any community to leave the place where they feel most at home.

Having noted all of that, it seems quite a few people are relishing the chance to have a new clubbing experience away from their usual hangouts and the club have been putting on a good show, with stilt walkers, angle grinder, UV paint, big video screen, etc.

Edit: it seems that Lockdown is to be replaced from Saturday April 9th by 'Hussle'. The promoter's info told is that it's all about, "tuff, dirty house!" Percussionist Pav and Freerunner are on the bill for the launch.
