We've just seen the line up for D:Percussion 2007. When they said that this year's event was going to be bigger and better than ever, they weren't kidding...
We knew that the organisers of D:Percussion were aiming for a two-day party to celebrate their 10th Anniversary until funding ruled it out. Maybe we thought that the line-up, when we saw it, would be a bit of a letdown after that. Given that D:Percussion has been better every year we shouldn't be so surprised, really.
But we weren't expecting to be passed a list of 200 artists who will be performing when the party takes over Castlefield on Saturday 4th August. And we're not talking about four-pissed-students-with-guitars acts; it's going to be class all the way.
There are nine stages, each with a different focus. The Main Stage is headlined by The Sunshine Underground, a posse of indie partymakers who have been scorching a trail through the music press over the last year. They are joined by Cherry Ghost, The Whip and The Elektrons as well as nine other indie bands and DJ's from XFM to keep things going.
The B Music Stage is about big names - there are rumours that Belle and Sebastian, The Horrors, Stereolab and Jarvis Cocker are all set to play...
The Kenworthy Stage is all about local talent, with Polytechnic, Jim Noir, Courteenas, The KBC, Whiskeycats and plenty of other bands from Manchester all doing their bit to show that we still turn out some seriously talented musicians.
The Unity Radio Stage has an urban edge with XTC, Platoon, Ex Logic, Damo B, Broke 'n' English and twenty two other artists going for it. Watch out for the jazz-inspired rappers The Blendaholics early on.
The Arches Stage is set to host some pretty incredible DJ's, from Manchester favourites Tangled, FC Kahuna, Locked and Guilty Pleasures to the king of carnival, Norman Jay, with the guys from Nish Nash Nosh, El Diablos Social Club and Friends and Family getting the party started.
The High Voltage Stage brings a crowd of up and coming bands with an edge, all hand-picked by the celebrated Manchester-based record label.
But D:Percussion isn't just about the music. Sketchcity, the monthly art and music mashup at Contact Theatre, is taking over a bigger area than ever. Grab a spray can and explore the joys of graffiti art, or just watch while some of the best artists in Manchester do their thing. Or if that doesn't take your fancy, you could explore the Roman Gardens and the macabre cabaret of the Whim Wham Club...
Whatever takes your fancy, you know D:Percussion is going to be something special. Grab your sun cream, your £2 donation (after all, we still want it to be going next year) and your dancing shoes because it's going to be one hell of a party!
