March event at Albert Hall with Kerri, Derrick, Delano
It's become something of a rewind and replay, a stuck record, a frequently looped sample for Manchester AfterDark to keep saying it but if it's true, it has to be said. The Hacienda keep announcing amazing line-up after amazing line-up. After a Christmas party at Sankeys (RIP) that featured many of the club's residents, the big American guest DJ's are back for a spring 2017 event at the Albert Hall.
Previous Hacienda parties have brought in the likes of Todd Terry, Frankie Knuckles, David Morales, Francois K and Danny Tenaglia.
This party also brings in a heavyweight American lineup, with three distinct house music locations represented in the form of Derrick Carter (Chicago), Kerri Chandler (New Jersey) and Delano Smith (Detroit). Mike Pickering and Jon Dasilva are the local names who will be representing the club's original residents.
Kerri, who we last saw at the Music Is Love NYE 2014 event at Sankeys, will be playing live keys over his set, which is a nice touch of irony given that the Albert Hall would have been filled with organ music a hundred years ago, under its original guise as a church. We also remember his set for Content in Joshua Brooks back in August 2012, which was a banger, and the complete sweatbox opposite of the spacious and expansive Albert Hall interior.
Derrick (pictured above) is someone we've seen in both Manchester and the Albert Hall as recently as NYE 2016 when he got to play it really old skool with a 'Derrick Does Disco' set for La Discotheque. Before that he played for Micron at the Mantra Warehouse. He's a man who can certainly switch styles when it suits but we're expecting one of his classic disco-influenced, Chicago jackin' house sets for this one. The vid below from a Boiler Room set will give you some idea of his style if you haven't caught him live before, and it'll warm you up for hearing him again if you have.
Delano Smith is another DJ who has, like Kerri, played at Joshua Brooks, and like Kerri, rocked Manchester on an NYE, when he achieved both again for the aforementioned (and since retired) Content parties. He's a rarer sight to see (and hear) in Manchester and it's his first time at the Albert Hall and for the Hacienda. It's worth covering a little of his Detroit heritage given that he's less well-known than some of his contemporaries on the bill. Delano started his DJ career in the eighties, playing disco but also ground-breaking new music, at top underground Detroit clubs including a residency at L’uomo Detroit, a club whose customers included Derrick May, Jeff Mills and Eddie Flashin' Fowlkes. He was 17 when he held that residency, and these were the pre-techno days when that sound was still forming on the back of disco, electro and house. Nowadays, he's on a deep techno/deep house vibe, playing at the likes of Suncebeat and Fabric.
