DPercussion is a free, unticketed event - but they'd like you to make a £3 donation when you get there.
We were pretty gutted to hear that this year's DPercussion is the last one ever.
It's the funding again. You may remember last year a backer pulled out and it looked as though the party was cancelled for the year until Bench stepped in. Even so, the organisers of DPercussion had to ask for a £2 donation at the gates from partygoers even though they have always tried to make it a free, unticketed event.
It turns out that this year another source of funding has fallen through and this time it is such a large amount that, even though they've upped the donation to £3, the organisers have had to admit defeat. Manchester City Council have stepped in with enough cash to enable this year's party to go ahead, but that's it. After this year, DPercussion is finally over.
Let's have a quick think about what DPercussion has managed to achieve over the last ten years. The IRA bomb did far more than just blow a hole into the Arndale centre. It shattered people's morale. It was the first time Manchester had seen a terrorist attack like that and a lot of Mancunians were terrified. They didn't want to go into town - not to socialise, not to eat, not to shop.
Events like Re:Percussion, as it was first called, did a huge amount to raise morale. By going to a huge, open air, free party just ten minutes' walk away from the bomb site, people in Manchester could make it clear than no terrorist attack was going to scare them off their own streets.
Since then, DPercussion has become one of the highlights of the music calendar. It stayed true to its roots, giving as much exposure as possible to up-and-coming DJs and bands in Manchester, as well as calling in favours from as many big names as it could. It was free for eight years, and when it had to introduce the donation at the gate the amount was kept low enough that no-one would be excluded.
So we're sad to hear that this is going to be the last DPercussion. However, it's ending on a high with the biggest and best line up so far, more stages, more acts, more everything. It's going to be an absolute blinder of a day. So get down there on August 4th, show your support and let's make the last DPercussion into a day we'll all remember!
