With Funkademia now doing the business every Saturday at One Central Street, it comes as only half a surprise to hear that its sister event, Northern Funk, is making a return.
From Friday 25th April the clubnight will be the regular Friday fixture. Northern Funk originally ran from 1996 to 2006 at The Attic, Subspace and then Zumeba before both it and Funkademia went into retirement. Promoter and DJ Dave Payne told us "if Alex Ferguson can change his mind about retiring, so can we. We received several offers to relaunch our nights and the One Central St one proved too good to turn down, thus Funkademia came back to life in 2007. We’ve now decided to relaunch N-Funk. We did a one-off Northern Funk night over Christmas which was rammed and a cracking night. We knew then the time was right to dust down the old vinyl & go for it again.
The new Northern Funk won't just rehash what's gone before though. Breaking with the previous format of uniquely pre-1979 soul and funk, they'll be mixing in the contemporary new artists whose inspiration derives from original soul. Hence expect to hear a playlist which could feature Marvin Gaye, Duffy, Aretha, Gnarls Barclay, Herbie Hancock, Stetsasonic, Issac Hayes and of course, Amy Winehouse.
Commanding the turntables will be DJ’s Fritz Great Lakes and Myk Nolan with support from the rest of the Funkademia DJ team namely Trafford Lovething, Jason Vereker, Good For the Soul, Dave Payne, Dave Booth and Jon Busstop.
This does however mean that the existing Friday night events, Stylus, Guilty Pleasures and Soulacentral will cease. Guilty Pleasures is relocating to Mint Lounge where it will be held every second Friday of the month.

Our incredibly generous friends at Northern Funk have given us 25 pairs of tickets to attend their relaunch on 25th April at One Central Street. That's free entry for 50 people, people! To request a pair, just email your name and mobile number details to win@manchesterad.co.uk before the end of office hours on 24th April and we'll contact all you lucky people before the event.

its a shame that some of the smaller nights are struggling in manchester, and it does seem like its only the more established nights that are able to keep going these days... although I do realise that they all are investing a lot more money and time into just keeping the nights going so I am just hoping these people dont get fed up too.
