Sankeys To Open Club in New York

The world's number one spreads its wings

Sankeys have announced that they are to launch a nightclub in New York in early 2011.

The Ancoats venue has been mulling over expansion plans for quite some time and their current position at the top of the DJ Mag 100 is more than enough proof that the time is right for beginning a campaign of world dominance. The club will be in Manhattan's Hells Kitchen district on 50th West Street and be a 16,000 sqft former garage with no previous club history. The capacity will be 1,100 and the venue will boast custom-made audio and visuals using the latest technologies, as you would expect.

One of Sankeys New York's residents will be DJ/Producer and former Sound Factory resident DJ A-LUV, who plays this weekend alongside The Martinez Brothers for the 'I Love NY' party on Saturday night, which sees the beginning of a residency for the energetic twosome. The New York venue's managers are jetting over this weekend to party and will be keeping a watchful eye on Sankeys' clubbers with the intention of offering dream jobs in the Manhattan nightclub once it has opened. This is a golden opportunity for DJs, bar staff, dancers and promo people so be sure to look your best, take business cards, have mix CDs with you and whatever other networking tools you have at your disposal.

Sankeys owner David Vincent has had a vision to open clubs around the world and feels that NY is the right place to start. "New York was always going to be the first location for Sankeys home from home. Out of all the cities that have made Sankeys what it is, New York has, without a doubt, had the biggest influence on our music, design and technology (such as our Phazon Soundsystem)". When the club reopened under Vincent back in 2000, one of their flagship Saturday night events, The Red Light, drew on the spirit of those New York and Chicago parties that thrived on just 'a basement, a red light and a feeling'. Red Light still shows its face occasionally if the right guest DJ, such as Dennis Ferrer, as in town. Now Sankeys are exporting the concept right back to the States, almost paying homage out of respect, admiration and gratitude for the long heritage of music that the US has given them.

"We built Sankeys in Manchester with all the great New York DJs in mind," affirms David. "Good lessons were learnt at great NYC parties such as Be Yourself at Vinyl from the greatest entertainer of them all, Danny Tenaglia. Sankeys has been organically built around the great traditions of New York. This is now our way of giving New York back what it gave Sankeys, with my own futuristic twisted twist of course."

The success of Sankeys NY is to be the yardstick by which future expansion plans will be dictated, with clubs in South America, Europe, Asia and other North American cities all under consideration. With the various stories of doom that have plagued our pages as the recession continues to bite into Manchester's nightlife scene, it's a pleasure to bring you a positive story for a change.

Great concept, giving back to the New York scene who've greatly influenced and inspired much of UK's dance scene. In particular Sankeys. I'm a born and bred Mancunian, inspired by various genres of dance since the late 80s. First coming to Sankeys in the late 90s. Its great to see how Sankeys has improved during the 00's, recapturing that late 90s feel. The NYC club sounds very promising, so much so I'd love to see it. Even better, get involved, somehow. I'm ready for a good break. Will you be in need of any experienced people from the UK club scene, to work at the club in NYC? (James, you should contact the club direct to ask them. We can't promise that they will read your request - Ed.)
