Stylish new bar for Spinningfields
The Alchemist, a new bar from the New World Bar Company (an offshoot of Living Ventures) has opened down at Hardman Street, Spinningfields. In addition, it will soon have a neighbour in the form of basement bar Australasia from the same owners, who have also recently purchased five restaurants from the Paul Heathcotes chain.
Living Ventures are, you may recall, the company that helped to revolutionise Manchester's upmarket bar scene when they opened The Living Room and helped to establish a new breed of celeb-haunt in the city. They followed that with the creation of the Prohibition bars although both brands have now been sold on. The company spent a few years concentrating its attentions on the restaurant scene with eateries such as Grill on the Alley and the acquisition of several units from the Est chain of modern Italian restaurants.
The Alchemist a high-end establishment as you would expect from a bar set among stores such as the Armanis of this world, and it astonishingly has a members' lock-in until 4am on a Monday morning. Who's drinking that late on a Sunday night? Answer: we suspect people who work weekends, such as footballers and the independently wealthy that don't have a boss to answer to on a Monday morning. It'll be interesting to see if that late night sesh actually takes off.
