It's been 2 years in the planning but finally Sankeys have today (Thursday 23rd April) exclusively unveiled to AfterDark their beach project, with 50,000 tonnes of the grainy stuff being offloaded at Beehive Mill so that the crazy gang (you lot) can stumble to your apartment and shake sand out of your trainers just like you would in Ibiza. Club owner David Vincent told us "There were plans to give Manchester a beach over the last two years but this was never totally in our control and for a few reasons, not least the weather, it never happened. But this year we were determined to do it."
Ian Brown once said, "Manchester’s got everything except a beach". Well now he's going to have to think of something else the city doesn't have. Like Amsterdam-style 'cafes'. Plonking a beach outside the club sounds great to us, especially when some of us can't afford a trip abroad this year. Sadly though, it's not for use during clubbing hours, but is open from noon until 10pm every day, weather permitting (check the online calender at www.sankeys.info), until Sunday 27th September and it's free entry. Course, this means that you could turn up in the evening ready to go clubbing, play some beach volleyball, have a cocktail from the fully licensed bar and then when the beach closes for the night, the club's open. This could be the coolest pre-club party the city has had in a long while.
There'll also be free wi-fi if you fancy surfing from a deckchair, summer samba beats playing, food on offer, a cinema and visual art. Given Sankeys' success in the DJ Magazine Awards and their 15 years since first opening, it seems now is the ideal time to throw a party. David agrees, "It's our 15th anniversary year and bringing a Caribbean beach to the middle of Ancoats seems the perfect way to celebrate. The beach must be built!"
